Riding the Wave...Spectrum and the Economy

It just doesn't stop, does it? All of the bad news about the economy. I was particularly jolted by this headline in the San Francisco Chronicle: Bay Area nonprofits brace for 2010 Armageddon. Talk about gloom and doom!

Spectrum has always done a lot with a little, which turns out to be helpful in times like these. We receive no government funding, and only a tiny fraction of our current operating budget of $350,000 comes from the state.

In fact, nearly two-thirds of our funding comes from individuals who rely on Spectrum to be a strong and steady presence for LGBT equality.

Our strength has always been, and will continue to be, the community of individuals who volunteer, participate in our programs, attend our events, make financial contributions, and tell others about our work. We are grateful for each and every one of you.

Over the coming weeks, we will keep you informed about how Spectrum is faring, and the steps we are taking to weather this storm. And, you are always welcome to email or call me with questions, concerns, and comments.

In the meantime, we wish you the best during these historic, yet uncertain, times.
